Are you smarter than a 7th or 8th Grader?
I had the opportunity to sit in on a 7th and 8th grade Teen Living Class at Smyrna Middle School
The teacher had a guest speaker from pregnancy support center to speak to the students about the number and dangers of today's STD’s. STD's are divided into 2 categories-Bacterial and Viral
1) There are 50 different Strains / Types of STD’s today.
2) Chlamydia and Gonorrhea - Of those that get tested, 1 out of 4 has one of these two diseases They both have no visually signs of early symptoms.
Chlamydia is not responding well to today's antibiotics and is the fastest growing in Tennessee.
Important, it can damage the female reproductive organs to the point they cannot have children
3) HIV Virus - 1/5 or 20% of people 50+ that get tested will test positive to the HIV virus annually in the state of Florida (AARP magazine)
4) Herpes is not curable and 1 out of 4 of the general public has some form of herpes and may be linked with cervical cancer
5) Condoms have microscopic holes that viruses can pass through.
6) Genital Warts - Highly contagious and not curable but treatable.Caused by a group of viruses called human papillomavirus. (HPV) These viruses can be present with or without the present of genital warts and are associated with various cancers in infected individuals.
7) Syphillis - May not be noticed because the sore or rash may be in an area that is not easy to see. Is not cured without treatment, even though the sore and rashes will go away on their own
Can cause brain damage, Insanity, paralysis, heart disease and death
8) Hepatitis B Transmitted by blood to blood contact in the same way HIV is transmitted.
It is the only STD that can be prevented with vaccinations
